Managing Course Assignments

How courses reach your staff through school assignments, what Required, Complete By, Available On, and Expires On mean, and where administrators set them.

In eLearn, content is assigned to organizations (the district, a school, or a group), not to individual teachers. When a system administrator assigns a course to a school, every active staff member in that school sees it. This article explains what an assignment controls and what teachers see. The step-by-step procedure and every field in the Assign Content window are in Assigning Content to Schools.

Who can do this: system administrators assign content, from System Administration > Products > a product’s Assignments tab. Teachers see the result in their content lists.

Each assignment gives one organization access to one product, with its own settings:

  • Required? marks the course Required on teachers’ cards.
  • Complete By is the due date shown on the card as “Required by…”.
  • Available On and Expires On set the window when teachers can open the course.
  • Passing Score sets the score needed to pass. Left blank, the license or publisher default applies.
  • Active? turns the assignment on or off without deleting it.

Because each school has its own assignment, a district can require a course at one school and offer it as optional at another. Use Complete By for district deadlines such as new-teacher onboarding, and leave optional learning unrequired.

A required course shows Required and the Complete By date on its card until the teacher completes it. The Required filter on Courses or Assessments lists only required items. Reporters track completion against due dates in the Required Progress Report.

An observer can also require a course for one teacher from an observation with Require Course. That is the only way to assign a course to a single person.
