Course Assessments and Exams

Where an exam sits inside a course, how it decides whether you pass the course, and where to find the rules for retakes.

Some courses end with an exam, or include one between lessons, so that the course counts for credit only when you show what you learned. This article covers exams inside a course. For standalone assessments on the Assessments page, see Taking Assessments.

An exam is a section of the course, listed on the player’s Contents tab like any other section. In a sequential course, an exam you have not finished appears in gray with a red asterisk, and you reach it with Next. Moving through sections is covered in Taking Courses.

An exam inside a course works the same way as a standalone assessment: answer the questions, then select Grade Exam (or Submit on an exam that does not show a score). Next appears when you can move on. The publisher sets whether you can retake the exam and how many attempts you get. For answering, grading, and retakes, see Taking Assessments.

On a required exam, Next does not appear until you reach the exam’s passing grade, so you cannot skip past it to finish the course.

The course is scored when you finish its last section:

  • A course with no required exam is complete when you finish every section.
  • A course with required exams gets a final score: the average of your scores on those exams. You pass the course when the final score reaches the passing score.

Your district can set the passing score on your school’s assignment. If it does not, the score comes from the license or the publisher’s default.

On the Courses page, the course card then reads “You passed this course on…” or “You failed this course on…”. A course without a scored exam reads “You completed this course on…”.

If the course is proctored, a retake needs your proctor. See Proctored Courses and Sessions.
