Understanding Professional Development Hours

How credits and PD hours reach your transcript, from completed content and from training your district records.

Most districts set a number of professional development hours or credits that teachers must earn each year or within a license renewal cycle. In eLearn, those hours appear on your transcript as credits. Lists and PDFs label the column Credits/Hours, because your district decides whether one credit means one clock hour, one CEU, or another unit.

Credits reach your transcript in two ways: you complete eLearn content that carries credits, or a system administrator records training you completed elsewhere.

The content publisher sets a Credits value on each course or assessment whose content type awards credits. eLearn does not calculate credits from time spent or from an estimated length.

When you complete the content successfully, eLearn adds a transcript entry with that credit value:

  • Content that tracks a score counts as successful only when you pass.
  • Content that does not track a score counts as successful when you complete it.
  • A failed attempt does not create a transcript entry.

If the publisher did not set a credit value, the entry shows 0.00 credits. The completion still counts on your transcript.

A publisher can set a learning path to create its own transcript entry when you finish the whole path. That entry’s credit value is the sum of the credits from the courses you passed in the path. To avoid counting the same hours twice, transcript lists and the downloaded PDF leave Credits/Hours blank for learning path entries and leave them out of Total Credits.

A publisher can also set a path or a piece of content so that it does not create transcript entries at all. If you completed something and it is not on your transcript, contact your system administrator.

Districts run PD that never touches eLearn: opening-week sessions, summer institutes, conferences, graduate coursework. A system administrator can record that training as a transcript entry with a credit value. These entries show on My Transcripts as gray cards with a tan ribbon, and they count toward Total Credits in your downloaded transcript like any other entry.

To get outside training recorded, send your system administrator the name of the training, the dates, the number of hours, and any certificate you received. They can attach the certificate to the entry.

  • My Transcripts shows the credits for each entry on its card. See Viewing My Transcripts.
  • Download Transcript produces a PDF with a Total Credits row for the date range you choose. Set the range to your renewal window or school year to see the hours you earned in that period. See Managing Your Training Records.

For system administrators: Manage PD Hours

Section titled “For system administrators: Manage PD Hours”

Requires the system administrator role. Organization administrators cannot open this page.

System administrators record outside training on the Manage PD Hours page (gear icon > System Administration > Transcripts > Manage PD Hours). One entry can cover everyone who attended a PD day, and people can be added later. For the full procedure, see Recording PD Hours for Outside Training.
